"Today, I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories."

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after six months. But I didn't drop out of college. I just stopped going to classes and continued hanging around. I was a dropout, but I kept on taking classes that interested me. I took a calligraphy class, which I thought was going to be a waste of time. But it turned out to be one of the most important things I ever did in my life.

In the early days of Apple, when we were designing the Macintosh computer, we wanted to use beautiful typography. And because of that calligraphy class, I learned about the different fonts and the way they look. It was all a part of the design that made the Macintosh the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never taken that calligraphy class, the Mac would have never had such a beautiful typeface.

So, you can't connect the dots looking forward. You can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in the future.

The second story is about love and loss.

I was adopted when I was born. My biological parents were young, unmarried, and not ready for a child. They gave me up for adoption, and I was raised by a family who didn’t have much money. But I was lucky. I grew up in a good home, and I was loved. But I always felt like an outsider. I was smart, and I was always trying to prove myself.

At 17, I started college, and at 20, I dropped out. At 21, I was fired from my job at Apple. I had no idea what I was going to do with my life. I was devastated. But I realized that I still had a lot of passion for what I did. I started a company called NeXT, and then another one called Pixar. Then I got married and had kids. And over the years, I came to realize that being fired from Apple was the best thing that ever happened to me.

The third story is about death.

When I was 30, I was diagnosed with cancer. The doctor told me I had a year to live. I was terrified. But as I sat there thinking about my mortality, I realized that I had been living with the fear of dying for too long. I decided to take action and make the most of the time I had left.

That experience changed my life. It made me focus on what really matters. It helped me make better decisions. And it taught me to live each day like it’s my last.

So, my message to you today is this: Don't settle. Stay hungry, stay foolish."
