【[英语六级作文]2013年12月英语六级作文真题(附范】题目:
Some people believe that the best way to solve the problem of traffic jams is to build more roads. Others, however, think that this approach is not effective and that other solutions should be considered. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
范文:
In recent years, with the rapid development of economy and the increasing number of private cars, traffic congestion has become a common phenomenon in many cities. Some people argue that the most effective solution to this issue is to expand road networks. However, others hold the opposite view, suggesting that building more roads is not a sustainable or efficient approach. In my opinion, while expanding roads may offer temporary relief, it is not a long-term solution to the problem of traffic jams.
On one hand, expanding roads can increase the capacity of transportation systems, thereby reducing traffic pressure in the short term. For example, in some urban areas, the construction of new highways has helped ease traffic flow during peak hours. Moreover, it can also promote economic development by improving the efficiency of goods transportation and facilitating business activities.
On the other hand, this approach has several drawbacks. First, building more roads often leads to increased car usage, which in turn aggravates traffic congestion. This is known as the "induced demand" phenomenon, where more roads encourage more vehicles on the road, ultimately leading to the same or even worse traffic problems. Second, the cost of constructing and maintaining additional roads is extremely high, which may not be feasible for many cities with limited budgets. Additionally, expanding roads may lead to environmental damage, such as deforestation and air pollution, which can have serious consequences for public health and ecological balance.
In my view, instead of simply building more roads, governments should focus on developing comprehensive and sustainable transportation policies. For instance, promoting public transportation, encouraging carpooling, and implementing traffic control measures such as congestion charges can help reduce the number of private vehicles on the road. At the same time, investing in smart traffic management systems and encouraging the use of electric vehicles can contribute to a more efficient and environmentally friendly transport system.
In conclusion, while building more roads might seem like an easy fix for traffic jams, it is not a practical or sustainable solution. A more balanced and forward-thinking approach is needed to address this growing challenge effectively.
